Sat Sept 27 SWEENEY TODD – the demon barber of fleet street (18 cert)

ToddUSA /UK 2008         Directed by Tim Burton, starring Johnny Depp, Helena Bonham Carter, 116 mins

Burton’s latest is an adaptation of Stephen Sondheim’s bloody musical, and it could be argued that there is no director better qualified to bring this juicy slice of Grand Guignol to the screen.

Set in eighteenth century London, Depp is the barber Sweeney Todd, returning to London from the colonies and - with the assistance of Mrs Lovett (Bonham-Carter), the morally challenged proprietor of the pie shop next door – intent on bloody revenge. Not for the squeamish, this is an operatic feast of gore, laced with gleefully black humour, a haunting score, and arguably the darkest and angriest of Depp’s roles to date. There is also sterling support from a much loved cast, including Alan Rickman as the judge at the top of Sweeney’s list, Timothy Spall as his assistant, and a cameo from Sacha Baren-Cohen as a preening barber who comes to a gratifyingly sticky end. Described by the BBC as “much like one of Mrs Lovett's meat pies: satisfying, drenched in blood and full of surprises”.
