Ireland, 2007 Directed by John Carney, Starring Glen Hansard & Markéta Irglovà Irglová Once was made for £100,000, but has since made $9 million worldwide, won several awards at international film festivals, picked up an Oscar, and become a huge word of mouth success story. It tells a simple tale of two people – a busker singing on the streets of Dublin, and a flower seller who confronts him about the inspiration for his music. The two connect through their love of music and music making, and the films explores the relationship between music and friendship – how music can reveal what we otherwise conceal, and make us more capable of intimacy. A sensitive and very understated modern love story, and arguably the only ‘charming’ and ‘heartwarming’ recent film that might actually live up to the adjectives. Don’t miss it.
